Look Beyond Core Markets to Unlock New Opportunities
Strategic leadership, insight, and planning have never been more important than at times of uncertainty. What are the challenges facing a business wanting new growth opportunities beyond their core markets? It starts with a vision and ambition to grow your core customer base. Staying still in a dynamic market is not an option, and whilst you understand your existing markets, and have built up a good reputation over years, growth comes from acquiring new customers and stepping out of your comfort zone.
Consider the following before jumping into a new market: Is there strong growth potential? Is there a first mover advantage? Do we have innovative solutions that address market needs? Research is key to answering these questions. Being curious is a key attribute for exploring the unknown. Networking at trade shows, joining relevant social media groups, and understanding what the competition are doing, all help to improve your confidence and knowledge of the market. Trade journals are a useful source of information and an outlet to build brand awareness. Editors are always looking for stories and solutions that are innovative or new. Being too ambitious on day one will discourage your team. Setting realistic goals and measures is key to success as entering new markets takes time and perseverance. Revisit these on a regular basis to track progress and update as needed.
If you manage to spot a gap in a market, first mover advantage can lead to increased brand recognition, customer loyalty, and market share. It may be necessary to introduce new products and services or reposition your existing offer to meet the specific market needs. Either way, there are risks associated with being first, but the rewards are potentially significant.
Early wins in a new market offer the opportunity to promote your success, create marketing collateral based on lived experience, and build a reputation. Celebrate early successes both internally and externally. A sale, regardless of the monetary value, will empower your teams and provide the marketing department with valuable insights to further develop brand awareness. Encourage a culture of sharing and collaboration. Early successes do not have to be transformative from a revenue perspective; they give you something to talk about, build confidence, and increase market awareness. You must earn credibility in a new market and win trust with customers by listening, learning, and aligning your offer to their needs. No one expects you to be the expert if you approach new opportunities with a curious mindset. What is important is to understand the customer needs and how your solution addresses them.
Providing industry specific information about applications and solutions on your website serves two purposes. Firstly, it provides your sales teams with invaluable market intelligence to help them start conversations with prospective customers and ask the right questions. And secondly, they provide a destination for customers to visit and learn more about how your solutions help address their needs and pain points, building credibility, and showing that your business understands their industry.
Know your target customer. Spend time developing customer persona profiles to get into the customer’s mindset and understand what keeps them awake at night. Knowing what is important to them will help develop your offer to the market and identify pain points. Understanding who the decision makers are is key to success: The engineer and the operations manager will have differing needs and so understanding their specific decision drivers is critical to making a successful sale.
Keep the human in the loop. Artificial Intelligence (AI) is an important tool for market development with the ability to brainstorm, test ideas and create content, but with the caveat that you need to have a very clear vision from the outset of what you are trying to achieve and use AI to help you get there. Due to the risks of hallucinations and bias, it is extremely important to critically evaluate the output from whichever AI tool you choose to use and do not assume it is correct. Prompt engineering is a skill to be learnt, so spend time testing ideas and building an understanding of how the AI responds. AI has the potential to speed up market development processes and reduce costs if used responsibly.
In summary, success relies on a clear initial vision, providing teams with the necessary resources, setting achievable goals, and building brand awareness through consistent effort and adaptability.
